Drugs Missing From New Castle Prison

Investigators say more than eight-thousand doses of a frequently abused pain medication are missing from an Indiana prison.

Officials at the New Castle Correctional Facility discovered more than 81-hundred doses of gabapentin missing. The medication is used to treat nerve pain and seizures, but is often abused…especially in prisons.

The missing drugs raise concerns about security and prescription practices in Indiana’s prisons, where a new private company recently took over medical and pharmacy services for the state’s 26-thousand prisoners under a 309- million, three-year contract.

The Indiana Department of Correction is investigating.
