Kokomo Fire Contract Dispute Brings Out Big Crowd

Hundreds of supporters of the Kokomo Fire Department packed City Hall Monday night to push city leaders to meet the contract demands of the city’s firefighters. But the meeting ended abruptly after city leaders decided not to take public comment on the matter.

Union leaders say they’re asking for better insurance coverage for retired and active firefighters. For the first time ever, Kokomo firefighters are working without a labor contract after a judge ruled in the city’s favor late last year when union leaders tried to force contract arbitration.

The city called an emergency meeting after coming up with a contract offer, but union members rejected the offer.
