Indiana To Get State Insect

Indiana may soon have an official state insect after years of lobbying by elementary school students.

The Say’s Firefly is named for New Harmony entomologist Thomas Say, who identified it nearly 200 years ago.

Governor Eric Holcomb announced last fall that he would make the firefly part of his 2018 legislative agenda. He followed up that promise with a plug for it in his State of the State address.

The Senate Public Police Committee unanimously endorsed the measure and the full Senate will vote on it  next week.
