County Council Delays Vote On Filling Court Reporter

The Grant County Council last night postponed a vote on whether to allow the hiring of a new court reporter, thanks to the county’s poor financial situation.

Superior Court Two officials had requested a new court reporter, but council members were hesitant because of a lack of funding.  But about two-thirds of the cost of the court reporter would be re-imbursed to the county under a federal grant program.

Council members proposed a roving reporter that could be shared by the local courts.  Judges say that would leave the courts without a staff person on duty when others are in court…meaning phone calls would be un-answered.

According to the “Chronicle-Tribune,” rather than vote on the issue, the County Council postponed a vote until next month so they could study the request further.
