Planes Collide At Marion Airport-2 Killed

Two planes collided late Monday afternoon at the Marion Municipal Airport, killing the two occupants of one plane.

Marion Police say a small Cessna taking off from one runway at the airport crashed into the tail section of a larger craft that was landing on a runway that intersects the other one.  The small plane then burst into flames.

The pilot of the small craft was identified as 31-year old Kyle Hibst of Elwood.  His passenger was 31-year old David Wittkamper of Elwood.  They were both pronounced dead at the scene.  Hibst and Wittkamper were close friends who were both members of the Pipe Creek Volunteer Fire Department in Madison County.

The other aircraft was a jet owned by the Avis Corporation of Upland.  None of the occupants of that aircraft were injured.  They were returning from a business trip to Michigan when the crash occurred.

Airport officials say the facility does not have a control tower, but pilots use a radio frequency to hear traffic from other pilots landing and taking off at the Marion Airport.

The F-A-A and the National Transportation Safety Board are now investigating the crash.
