Marion Council Approves Landlord Registration Ordinance

Beginning next January, landlords in Marion will be required to register with the city.

The Marion City Council last night gave final approval to a companion ordinance for the city’s new Neighborhood Preservation ordinance that hopes to improve living conditions for renters and hold landlords accountable.

Starting January first of 2019, landlords will be required to register with the city, with a five-dollar annual registration fee.  Online work is being prepared so landlords can register there and not have to come to city hall.  If they live out of state, the landlords will be required to have an agent who lives within 30-miles of the property they are renting out.

The “Chronicle-Tribune” reports that the new ordinance will allow the city to impose civil penalties for landlords who fail to register or fail to keep up their properties.
