Professor Wants Lynching Monument At Courthouse

The Grant County Commissioners are studying a proposal from a Huntington University Professor who wants to place a monument on the Grant County Courthouse lawn to commemorate the lynching of two black men in 1930.

Jack Heller represents a group called the Equal Justice Initiative. that wants memorials for hundreds of lynching victims in the United States.

Heller says the effort isn’t just about the Marion lynching, but about attitudes about such events and racial bias that still exist today.

Heller noted a recent threat made to a black minister from Fort Wayne at a local gas station that Marion lynches people of his race.  The Equal Justice Initiative wants to erect monuments to hundreds of lynching victims across the country.

Heller approached the Grant County Commissioners about placing a monument on the Courthouse lawn, because that’s where the two men were lynched in Marion 88-years ago.  The commissioners are studying that proposal further before making a decision.
