Bill Proposed To Allow Townships To Leave School Districts

An Indiana lawmaker wants to allow townships to have the option to switch school districts if they choose to do so.

Under the bill proposed by State Senator Mike Bohacek of Michiana Shores, a township and the school district they want to leave would have to mutually agree on the move. Then they would have to have a plan of action approved by the state board of education and eventually by voters in the township through a referendum.

Bohacek says consolidation has created awkward boundaries that have some students going to school districts almost an hour away from where they live.
