Marion School Board to consider Police force

The establishment of a Marion community school police department could be in the future.

The Chronicle Tribune is reporting today that Marion Community Schools could become part of a growing trend of Indiana school corporations to form their own police departments if the school’s board of trustees approves establishment of the Marion Community Schools Corp. Police Department.

MCS already has police officers stationed at every school in the corporation. Most are Marion Police Department officers working in their off-duty hours. School officials said that won’t change if the creation of the police department is approved.

The police department was on the school board’s agenda Tuesday night, but Superintendent Brad Lindsay withdrew it saying he needed to provide the board with more information and answer some board member questions before bringing it to a vote. He plans to bring it before the board at a future meeting.
