Johnson & Johnson ordered to pay $572 million in landmark opioid case

Johnson & Johnson will have to fork over $572 million for its part in fuelling Oklahoma’s opioid addiction crisis.

This particular case was the first to go to trial out of thousands of lawsuits filed against opioid makers and distributors.

During the trial, lawyers argued that Johnson & Johnson carried out a lengthy marketing campaign that minimized the addictive painkillers’ risks and promoted their benefits.

Johnson & Johnson said immediately after the judgment that it would appeal.
