CDC: don’t touch pig ears or feed them to your dog

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a straightforward warning to pet owners: Don’t touch pig ears or feed them to your dog.

The warning comes after a salmonella outbreak, spread through the popular canine treat, has reached a 35th state, according to the CDC.

“A total of 127 people infected with the outbreak strains of salmonella,” the warning reads. Of the victims, 24 are children under the age of 5. No deaths have been reported.

The CDC says humans can contract the illness by handling pig ears or even by coming into contact with a dog who has eaten one.

Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps.
