BREAKING: Pipe Creek ammonia, chlorine levels return to normal after thousands of fish killed

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management reports chlorine and ammonia levels, which spiked on Sept. 11, have returned to normal in Pipe Creek.

According to a Department of Natural Resources spokesperson, the toxicity killed around 3,000 fish.

On Sept. 11, IDEM’s Emergency Response received a call from a DNR officer that there was a fish kill in Pipe Creek just east of Sweetser on State Road 18.

IDEM dispatched two Emergency Responders to the scene to investigate. They discovered elevated chlorine and ammonia levels that were sporadic.

“The investigation traced the elevated levels of chlorine and ammonia to a permitted outfall, and the responsible parties took corrective actions to address their discharge,” according to an e-mail to WBAT from IDEM. “After corrective actions were taken, samples from Pipe Creek showed no traces of ammonia or chlorine.”
