Ohio high school cross-country athlete disqualified for wearing hijab

A high school student in Ohio was disqualified from a cross-country race for wearing a hijab.

16-year-old Noor Abukaram says she has competed for the last three years wearing a Nike sports hijab, with no issues. But over the weekend, track meet officials disqualified her – after running her fastest 5k of the season.

Ohio athletic officials say the issue was that Abukaram had not submitted the proper waiver form. But Abukaram says the rule “does not exist in writing” and feels her rights were violated.

Abukaram has since submitted the waiver and has been approved to compete at regionals this weekend.
