Chad Seybold suing city, numerous defendants for $3 million

Chad Seybold has filed a lawsuit to seek $3 million in damages from the City of Marion and several defendants listed on court documents, due to court proceedings that involve the former YMCA renovation project.

According to the complaint filed in Grant County Superior Court 1, Chad Seybold is suing The City of Marion, Mayor Jess Alumbaugh, legal counsel Attorney Thomas Hunt and Ice Miller, Grant County Growth Council Executive Director Tim Eckerle, former Chronicle-Tribune Editor David Penticuff, First Farmers Bank & Trust, along with what’s described as 1-2 “secret donors” and 3-6 “unknown donors.”

In the lawsuit, Seybold alleges that there’s no underlying evidence supporting the city’s claims against Seybold ever existed, such as Seybold allegedly committing fraud.

Instead, Seybold says that the goal of the lawsuit by the City of Marion against him was for “…The ulterior purpose of securing the political ambitions of Mayor Alumbaugh in his bid for reelection…”

The court document also alleges that the lawsuit served to secure Attorney Hunt’s “lucrative position” as the city’s corporate counsel.

City attorneys allege that nearly $680,000 of a $2.5 million tax increment finance bond was mismanaged, according to the Chronicle-Tribune.

The document states that due to “tremendous amounts of negative publicity” which was produced for the Chronicle-Tribune newspaper by Penticuff, Seybold had to move from Marion to Hamilton County.

Seybold also alleges that Mayor Alumbaugh campaigned off the negative stories written by Penticuff, which helped to win him the election.

Alumbaugh did not return WBAT’s request for comment.
