CDC: Vaping illnesses likely connected to vitamin E acetate, found in bootleg THC products

Amid talks of raising the national vaping age to 21, researchers have announced they’ve likely pinpointed the ingredient that’s been causing all the vaping-related illnesses.

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say they’ve found “solid” evidence that the 2,000 vaping-related illnesses are linked to vitamin E acetate, a synthetic form of vitamin E found in bootleg THC products.

While vitamin E can be good for people when ingested or applied to the skin, inhaling it is an entirely different story — it leaves a honey-like coating on the walls of users’ lungs, the CDC reports.

Vitamin E acetate is found in vape products that contain THC, the chemical in marijuana that makes users high, the CDC notes. It’s not found in regular vape oils and juices containing nicotine.
