Report: World’s oceans losing oxygen rapidly

A new study by 67 scientists from 17 countries has found that the world’s oceans are “struggling to breathe”, losing oxygen at an alarmingly rapid rate.

The study’s finds were released at the World Climate Summit in Spain Saturday.

In the 1950s, 45 ocean sites suffered from low oxygen. That number has now risen to 700, with the ocean’s oxygen levels dropping by 2% since the ’50s.

The two biggest culprits stealing the ocean’s oxygen are rising water temperatures from burning fossil fuels and algae growth due to fertilizer run-off, both of which are affecting marine biodiversity and ocean ecosystems.
