IWU Professor Jerry Pattengale appointed Interim CEO of Religion News Foundation

Indiana Wesleyan University professor and alumnus Jerry Pattengale has been appointed interim CEO and President of Religion News Foundation (RNF), and CEO and Publisher of its subsidiary, Religion News Service (RNS).

RNF and RNS work in partnership with the Associated Press and The Conversation, collectively the most prominent religion news outlet internationally, according to a press release.

RNS is a news agency based in New York City and Washington D.C. that covers religion, ethics, spirituality and moral issues with a mission to improve their readers’ understanding of world religions. After joining the board more than eight years ago, Pattengale has served as the Vice Chair of RNS.

While in his new position, Pattengale hopes to continue to be an example of a leader who takes a peaceful approach to situations. During this time at the helm of RNS and RNF, Pattengale hopes to set the stage for the permanent person to excel in his or her role in the organization.

“One of the greatest joys has been to involve many younger scholars in establishing their careers and senior colleagues in using their great gifts,” Pattengale said. “I just hope that in this season of my career I am able to help build up this next generation of writers and to do so in a way that is a team approach and also encouraging to their strengths,” Pattengale said.

At IWU, Pattengale serves as University Professor. His accomplishments reach far beyond IWU and RNS, including one of two founding scholars and leaders of The Museum of the Bible (DC) organizing programs for scholars from all over the world, hosting public lectures and assisting with publications and broadcasts.

“Inexplicable: How Christianity Spread to the Ends of the Earth,” a six-part TV series co-written by Pattengale, will be released in January 2020 (TBN). His book, Inexplicable, will also come out in January.

Pattengale recently released The State of the Evangelical Mind (IVP), gaining finalist award recognition from the Lilly Fellows. Other recent books are Is the Bible at Fault? How the Bible Has Been Used to Justify Evil, Suffering, and Bizarre Behavior (Hachette) and Telling the Truth with a Smile (DustJacket).

Pattengale also serves as the longstanding Associate Publisher of the Christian Scholar’s Review. He is on the board for the Jonathan Edwards Center (Yale University) and Africa New Life for Rwanda (U.S. headquarters, Portland, Oregon), and holds distinguished appointments at Tyndale House, Cambridge; Sagamore Institute, Indy: Excelsia College (Australia); Gordon Conwell-Theological Seminary, Charlotte; Moody Center, Northfield, MA.

“Jerry embodies a deep sense of joy, willingness to serve others, profound wisdom, and a knowledge that God is guiding his destiny,” said Rob Loos, a producer at zing productions inc. (Hollywood, CA). “Whether he’s dealing with students, billionaires, world leaders, or nutty television producers like me, he finds a way to relate to and encourage us all. I couldn’t be more excited that RNS is in such capable hands.”
