Winter Hard on Street Departments
The latest snow storm creates just one more long stretch of work for highway and street department crews and taxes equipment, chemicals and budgets.
Assistant Marion Street Superintendent Willie Campbell says numerous big snows this winter have depleted chemicals used to break up ice, causing city officials to have to buy more and overspend their budgets. But Campbell says they’re finding more chemicals to purchase to do the job.
Campbell says it’s also taxing on city equipment, the streets themselves and the Street Department workers...who work long shifts to get the streets open and then to keep them open.
