Ball State University officials want to take control of the struggling Muncie School system.
A bill being considered by the House Ways and Means Committee would turn control of Muncie schools over to Ball State. If approved, the university would assume responsibility for managing the district beginning in July.
Ball State President Geoffery Mearns says the bill would allow the university Trustees, with the help of Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler and the Muncie City Council, to appoint a new seven-member board tasked with running Muncie Schools.
Mearns says the goal would be to stem the decline in student enrollment and eventually increase it. He adds the university would not use student tuition or state funding to subsidize the managing of Muncie Schools.
Muncie Schools have been under the control of an emergency manager appointed by the state since last year.
