EMT Dies In Miami County Crash On US 31

A northern Indiana E-M-T was killed in a traffic accident early this morning while helping to transport a young patient from a hospital in South Bend to one in Indianapolis.

Indiana State Police say the driver of the ambulance apparently fell asleep and ran a red light at the intersection of U-S 31 and highway 218 near the Grissom Air Reserve Base.  The ambulance struck another vehicle and flipped over.

The E-M-T riding in the back…31-year old Mousa Chaban of Mishawaka…was partially ejected from the ambulance and was pronounced dead at the scene.  The ambulance driver and the driver of the other vehicle and his passenger suffered minor injuries.  The five-month old child being transported to an Indianapolis hospital and the child’s mother were not injured.

State Police say the crash remains under investigation.
