Marion City Council Passes Landlord Ordinance

The vote was unanimous last night as the Marion City Council approved a new ordinance governing landlords, their responsibilities, how to provide safe housing and to provide an effort to reduce neighborhood blight.

After an hour-long public hearing on the matter, the council suspended its’ rules and passed the measure on a third and final vote.

Councilwoman Deb Cain said it’s not perfect, but it’s a start and should be given a chance.

The ordinance requires minimum standards on safety equipment in apartments and rental homes and includes a landlord registry that requires them to register with the city and to provide ways for tenants and city officials to contact them.  Out of state owners must have a property manager that lives with 30-miles of the property.

The new ordinance will take effect on January first of 2019.
