Marion City Council Passes Local Income Tax Increase

The Local Income Tax in Grant County will go up next year.

That was made official last night when the Marion City Council approved the increase on an 8-to-1 vote.  Passage by the Marion City Council, combined with the earlier approval by the Grant County Council means that units of government representing more than half of the population of Grant County have approved the increase in the tax…which will go from 2.25-percent to 2.55-percent beginning January first of next year.

The “Chronicle-Tribune” reports several city council members said they didn’t want to vote for the tax increase…but felt they had to because of the local financial situation.

The increase means the average tax payer in Grant County will pay about 150 extra dollars in taxes a year beginning in 2019.

The city council also gave preliminary approval to the city’s 2019 budget and will hold a public hearing and final vote on the budget October 16th.
