Indiana Women Honored-Portraits At Governor’s Office

Three Indiana women have been honored by having their portraits displayed at the Governor’s Office in the Indiana Statehouse.  It was part of International Women’s Day on Friday.

Those honored include Madame C-J Walker…the daughter of a former slave who created an empire with hair and beauty products and used her fortune to help educate young black women.

Also honored was the first woman to enlist in the U-S Marine Corps…Kokomo native Opha Mae Johnson, who set the stage for many other women to enlist in the U-S Military.

Also honored was Huntington native Helen Purviance, who became known as “The Donut Girl,” who cooked donuts to serve to American troops on the front lines in France during World War One.
