Paegle Arrested on Warrant, Faces Additional Charges

On April 6, 2019 at approximately 2:34 pm, Marion Police Officer Billy Cole, was on uniformed patrol in the area of the 800 Block East 26th St. While in the area, Officer Cole observed a white male, matching the description of Julian Paegle, and a female enter the residence of 820 E. 26th St.

Due to previous law enforcement experience, Officer Cole knew that Julian Paegle frequented the location, and was currently wanted through Grant County on active warrant as well as the Indiana Department of Corrections. Officer Cole then requested an additional unit for a warrant service at the residence of 820 E. 26th St. Officer Kyle Griffith arrived on scene and provided rear security as Officer Cole approached the front door of the residence. Note: This is also the address listed on Mr. Paegle’s arrest warrant.

Officer Cole knocked on the front door, the door was answered by a middle aged man. Officer Cole advised that he was there to speak with “Julian”. The man (home owner) advised “He’s in the bedroom”. Officer Cole then went into the house and located Julian Paegle attempting to climb out of the window. Officer Griffith was outside of that window and ordered Mr. Paegle to stop.

Officer Griffith took control of Mr. Paegle. Officer Cole exited the residence and met up with Officer Griffith and Mr. Paegle in the back yard. Officer Griffith attempted to place Mr. Paegle into handcuffs. Mr. Paegle resist Officer Griffith’s commands at which time Mr. Paegle forced his arms apart, preventing completion of being handcuffed. Officer Griffith responded by placing his knee in the middle of Mr. Paegle’s back, while Officer Cole assisted by bringing Mr. Paegle’s arms closer together – Mr. Paegle was then handcuffed.

Throughout the handcuffing process, Mr. Paegle was verbally abusive, refused to cooperate and uttered comments concerning his freedom. After Mr. Paegle was safely in custody, Officer Griffith and Officer Cole assisted Mr. Paegle to his feet and escorted him to a patrol vehicle.

Once the officers arrived next to the patrol vehicle to transport Mr. Paegle, he became combative. Mr. Paegle broke away from the officer’s grip, while secured in handcuffs, and took that opportunity to flee. As Mr. Paegle fled from officers, they caught up to him and I tackled him. After Mr. Paegle was on the ground, Mr. Paegle commenced to kicking at Officer Griffith and Officer Cole. Mr. Paegle continued kicking and Officer Griffith caught one of his leg to prevent further attacks; However, Mr. Paegle continued kicking with his other leg. Officer Cole delivered two kicks to Mr. Paegle’s back. After delivering those kicks, Mr. Paegle stated “OK, I’m done!” and stopped physically resisting. Due to Mr. Paegle’s combativeness, the officers requested an additional unit equipped with a cage for transport. Officer Griffith and Officer Cole assisted Mr. Paegle to his feet. Mr. Paegle was then transported to the Grant County Jail without further incident.

Arrested: Julian Paegle, age 27 to answer to the charges of: Resisting Law Enforcement with Injury to Another (X2) and Battery Resulting in Injury on a Law Enforcement Officer (X2).
