Marion, Ball State grad wins Pulitzer Prize

Marion High School graduate Dan Swenson has won a Pulitzer Prize for his work in community journalism.

Swenson, who is the graphics editor for the Advocate in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was part of a reporting team that examined the state’s discriminatory conviction system.  It included a Jim Crow-era law that enabled Louisiana courts to send defendants to jail with jury consensus on the accused person’s guilt.  Swenson, who is a 3 time Pulitzer Prize winner, was responsible for the data visualization piece of the project.

Swenson is a Michigan city native and 1995 Ball State University graduate.  He has also work at the Lexington Herald Leader and the Chicago Tribune.
