Howard County “Red for Ed” event

Staff members at several Howard County schools dressed in red and held signs ahead of their workdays throughout the area as part of the locally organized Red for Ed event to raise awareness about teacher pay.

One goal of Wednesday’s event was to open the eyes of state legislators and senators to the fact that the issues affect more than just teachers, that it’s a community issue and members of the community are interested and invested in public schools.

Last week, Indiana Senate Republicans proposed a biennium budget that would include an increase for K-12 funding. It was noted that increases in teacher salaries would be funded by appropriating $90 million over the biennium for the Teacher Appreciation Grant program, which is a $30 million increase over the current budget.
