Carey Services’ ‘Super Hero Week’ begins today

Today kicks off “Super Hero Week” at Carey Services.

The first three days of the week will have staff members conducting superhero-themed activities with the individuals the agency serves. The week’s activities will conclude with a graduation ceremony on Aug. 1 at 2 p.m., where participants will receive certificates and other items to commemorate their promotion to “superhero” status.

“Like millions of other people around the world, many of the individuals we serve love super heroes,” said Dan Kaufman, director of day services, in a prepared statement. “We always have group events to see any new super hero movie when it comes out, and many individuals have their favorite character they really follow. It just made sense to have a fun summer activity around a super hero theme that a lot of people could relate to.”

Each day of the week, participants will take part in superhero-related activities, such as using tools to pass imaginary Kryptonite or a Captain America-themed toss game where participants try to pass the hero’s shield to each other. The whole idea is to engage participants in fun ways to promote activities.

“It’s been fun to plan and a lot of work getting this ready,” said Scott Craig, a direct support professional and avid collector of superhero-themed memorabilia who has been heavily involved in planning the week. “Not only will it be fun for the participants, but it’s actually been great for the staff as we’ve all worked really close together to prepare the activities. I know a lot of the individuals we serve have been excited to see some of the things we have planned for the week; that’s a rewarding part of our work is to see the impact these kinds of things have in changing lives.”
