Small plane crashes in Allen County, passengers escape with parachutes

A small plane went down in a field on the southeast side of Allen County.

Friday afternoon the Fort Wayne – Allen County Airport Authority alerted the sheriff’s department about an incoming aircraft that was having mechanical issues.

The man and woman inside the plane deployed a parachute at 1,000 feet and exited the single-engine aircraft. The plane, a Cirrus SR22, was able to go down in a field off of Brunson Road, near US 27.

The couple from Virginia were on their way to South Bend for Saturdays Notre Dame game.

They both suffered minor injuries. The FAA is investigating the incident along with the sheriff’s department and the airport authority.
