Arrest made in 1985 Greek hijacking

Greek police arrested a 65-year-old male believed to be a Lebanese citizen involved in the 1985 hijacking of TWA Flight 847. The flight was hijacked in Athens and lasted 17 days.

The hijackers held 147 passengers and crew members hostage for 17 days.

Some of the hostages were beaten and a U.S. Navy diver was beaten unconscious before being shot and killed. His body was dumped on a tarmac in Beirut in front of TV cameras.

Sources say the man arrested is the same man who was arrested for the hijacking and Stethem’s death in 1987. He was sentenced to life in prison but was paroled in 2005 and returned to Lebanon.

The suspect’s name has not been officially revealed. Three suspected hijackers from Flight 847 remain on the FBI’s most wanted terrorist list.
