Taylor University’s Bible, Christian Education and Philosophy Department and the School of Natural and Applied Sciences will host noted Old Testament scholar Dr. John Walton for an address at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22, in the Cornwall Theater, located in the LaRita Boren Campus Center.
Walton, a Professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College is also an editor and writer of Old Testament comparative studies and commentaries. Prior to joining the Wheaton faculty, Walton served for 20 years as a faculty member at Chicago’s Moody Bible Institute.
His areas of expertise include the Old Testament and the ancient Near East, Old Testament theology, the Old Testament Books of Genesis and Job, and the topic of science and faith.
Walton’s research has focused on comparing the culture and literature of the Bible and the ancient Near East, with his most recent research specifically focusing on that region and its relationship to the Old Testament. He is currently working on a commentary on the Old Testament Book of Daniel for the New International Commentary on the Old Testament, which will be published by Eerdmans.
He holds degrees from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (Ph.D., Hebrew and Cognate Studies, 1981), Wheaton Graduate School (M.A., Biblical Studies: Old Testament, 1975), and Muhlenberg College (A.B., Economics/Accounting, 1974).
Additionally, Walton has published dozens of books, articles and translations, both as writer and editor, and will base his address on his book The Lost World of Genesis One.
