I&M announces $20 million Grant County electric transmission network upgrade

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) is planning to invest around $20 million to upgrade the electric transmission network in Grant County.

I&M invites Marion residents and landowners in the project area to learn more at an upcoming open house. The public event takes place on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the New Life Community Church, located at 2011 W. 10th St. in Marion.

The project, known as the “Western Marion Area Improvements Project,” will upgrade about 5 miles of 34.5-kiloVolt power line to 69-KV standards, according to a company news release.

The company said those improvements will help to ensure a reliable flow of electricity for area customers and prepares the electric grid for economic growth.

The project involves rebuilding some sections of line in the company’s current right-of-way. Other sections of the project may include re-routes and require new easements.

For those who attend the open house, there is no formal presentation. Attendees can arrive at any time to review maps and talk with project team members. Input gathered from the open house helps the project team to determine the final route.

I&M expects construction to begin in Summer 2021 and conclude by Summer 2022. Additional details, including project area maps, are available at IndianaMichiganPower.com/WesternMarion.
