Aguilar named next Principal of Frances Slocum Elementary

Marion Community Schools has announced that Rianne Aguilar will step up to the role of Principal at Frances Slocum Elementary for the 2020-21 school year.

Aguilar has been Assistant Principal at Frances Slocum Elementary since 2018, and she looks forward to working with students and families in this new role.

“I am incredibly excited and am thankful for the opportunity to continue to serve our Frances Slocum families” she said. “Over these last two years I have been motivated to work alongside such a dedicated and talented staff that I know will work hard to provide the best possible education and meet the needs of our students. In these next few months our goals will be to reach out to our families and build connections that we know will be lasting moving forward.”

She said that even though school buildings are currently closed, the staff is hard at work.

“We will continue to meet students where they are and provide intentional academic strategies and social emotional learning with a focus in bridging the academic gaps for our students in both literacy and math,” Aguilar said. “We also have a unique opportunity for teachers to participate in a variety of professional development opportunities that I believe will allow us to provide our students our very best moving forward.”

Aguilar started at Marion Community Schools in 2013 as a special education teacher at Allen Elementary School. She joined Frances Slocum Elementary as Assistant Principal in 2018. She is a Marion native and a proud Marion High School graduate.

“Marion Community Schools has been an influential part of who I am today, and I am forever grateful for the education I received in Marion,” she said.

She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and special education from Grace College. She earned her master’s degree in school administration from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Marion Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Brad Lindsay said he believes Aguilar will excel in this new role.

“Rianne learned much as Dr. Gwen Lavert’s Assistant Principal in the past two years, and she is prepared and ready to receive the leadership baton for the next phase of total-child growth at Frances Slocum Elementary,” Dr. Lindsay said. “Rianne is a proud Marion Community Schools product, and she is fully invested in our community. She is committed to the success of all of our students, and her love for our families and our community is clear. I have full confidence and trust in Rianne. I have no doubt she will deeply invest into the mission-dedicated work it takes to help every student learn and grow, so they can make significant lifelong contributions to others.”

Current Frances Slocum Elementary School Principal Dr. Gwen Lavert’s said she has confidence in Aguilar.

“Rianne is faithful, determined, and dedicated to the calling,” Dr. Lavert said. “Her commitment to our families is evident, and she believes all students have the right to equal access to the curriculum. She will leave no student behind.”

Aguilar said her time working with Dr. Lavert was invaluable.

“I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to work alongside Dr. Lavert,” Aguilar said. “I have been blessed with the opportunity to see her passion for students, passion for literacy, and passion for this community. She has been an extraordinary mentor for me. I look forward to carrying on from the foundation that Dr. Lavert has already started at Frances Slocum.”

Marion Community Schools said it is extremely grateful for Dr. Lavert’s three years of excellent service and leadership.
