It’s Mushroom Hunting Season…

Some people get excited for Baseball season.  Some look forward to Deer Hunting Season.  For me, It’s Late April and Early May.  That’s when the mushrooms start popping around Indiana.  Yes, I am one of those mushroom hunters!  I’ve been out three or four times.  I always say a bad day mushroom hunting is still a good day of walking in the woods.

Morals!  That is the coveted find.  Blacks, Grays, Yellows…that is what you’re looking for.  I will say that you have to be careful while mushrooms hunting.  There are false morals.  I will provide some links at the bottom of the blog to help you out if you’ve never gone hunting.  Now when I say morals are the most sought after, there are plenty of other kinds of mushrooms you can eat.  As I said before, BE VERY CAREFUL!

With the last couple of days being a little warmer, I figured that it was time.  I usually only hunt at my parent’s place.  And have had hit or miss luck finding an there.  Some years tons, other years, not a one!  And it looked like this year was going to be one of those skunked years.  This weekend I was there Friday evening.  Nothing.  I did find a snake…which is one of my biggest fears!

Sunday afternoon we were home, and were tired of cleaning, organizing, watching tv, playing board games and the like.  So I told my wife that I was going mushroom hunting.  She loves them more than I do, so she was all for it.  Before I left, I popped over to my neighbor’s yard.  Yes, it town, because I knew that around one tree in his yard that they almost always popped up there.  And low and behold I found about a dozen.  Of course I gave them to him.  But that means that they are popping!

A trip to my folks and about 2 hours in the woods resulted in…just this pretty picture.

After my feeling of disgust, my wife called and said that one of our friends said I was more than welcome to head to his woods.  I thought, why not.  So I head to a woods I have only been in once or twice.

Five minutes in, and boom, 4 grays!  I search and search the area around where I had found those 4… but nothing.  So I move on to other parts of the woods, and find a “honey hole”.  But not morals…”peckerheads”…I’m sorry, that’s the only name I know for them.  Not as coveted as morals, but almost as tasty!

This was just the first round.  There will be many more trips to the woods for me!  And if you are mushroom hunter, best of luck!

Here is a guide to mushroom hunting.
