A Lafayette couple has been charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent, after a five-year investigation.
Police say in 2014, Michael and Kristine Barnett abandoned an eight-year-old Ukrainian girl they had adopted, legally changed her age from eight to 22, and then moved to Canada.
WLFI says the girl told officers she had a form of dwarfism, and Kristine Barnett told the girl to just tell others she just “looks young.”
Neighbors “took her under their wing” and are cooperating in the investigation.
