Great Barrier Reef downgraded to ‘very poor’ condition

Researchers in Australia say the Great Barrier Reef has reached a “critical point” due to warming oceans.

In a new report, the government agency that manages the reef downgraded its condition to “very poor” due to climate change and other factors, including coral bleaching, illegal fishing and coastal development.

The Great Barrier Reef is a vital source of ocean biodiversity covering over 133,000 square miles.

The report calls for “significant global action to address climate change” to slow the Reef’s deterioration.
