Your UPS packages might start arriving via drone soon. The delivery company just got approval from the FAA to operate a fleet of drone aircraft.
The clearance gives UPS the right to assemble an “unlimited number” of delivery drones, allows them to fly at night, and clears them to deliver packages weighing more than 55 pounds – although a UPS spokesman said the technology for heavier deliveries isn’t ready yet.
However, for the time being, drone delivery will be limited to universities, hospitals, and other campus-like areas. Also, a pilot for each drone will have to be on-site for deliveries.
