The Most Googled Olympic Questions Answered

The Olympics are so awesome because they expose sports that a lot of folks wouldn’t know about otherwise. I enjoy watching them to see how all the hard work for these athletes is paying off. A lot of questions have been Googled this Olympics, so Google Trends decided to break them down for us. Here are some of the questions and answers that are popular right now.

  1. Why is Russia Competing as R.O.C? I actually asked my mom if she knew this one. We did end up Googling it… The reason… Russia was ban after the last Olympics because they had too many athletes doping at the last games. R.O.C. stands for Russian Olympic Committee. The only way they could bring athletes this year is if they competed for the Olympic Committee, not the country. I’m not sure if in the future if they will be able to represent their country again or if they will have to continue under R.O.C.
  2. Why does one player wear a different Jersey in Volleyball? This wasn’t a thing when I played many moons ago, but now that player is what they call the libero. They can replace anyone on the backline no questions asked. They are more of a defensive player that has skills of receiving serves as well as passing. The reason for the different jerseys is to help the line judges know who is subbing and when a sub is made.
  3. How deep are the Olympic Pools? This year the pools are around 10 feet deep. The diving pool is up to 16 feet depending on which event is going on. Folks also wanted to know why divers shower before they dive. This has to do with preventing an injury due to the temperature changes of the air to the pool.
  4. Why isn’t Horse Polo a sport at the Olympics anymore? Me being the horse-obsessed person I am, I added this question to the list. The reason it’s not there… money. It would cost a lot to get passports for the horses, yes they had to and for the riders. They would also have to get the horses there which was super expensive and feed them, so it was decided to not have it anymore.
